At one of our regualr weekly maintenace gardens in Offord, the client had an existing area of garden that had been neglected and left for some time. The area was prone to weeds and looked messy compared to the rest of the garden that we maintain on a weekly basis.
The clients were keen to have an area that could be easily maintained and somewhere they could grow thier own vegetables and herbs.
The decision was made to landscape the area and provide various raised beds from railway sleepers to create a neat and tidy raised bed area for planting.
We cleared and levelled the area and covered with a weed supressing membrane.
There was a lot of concrete edging and roots to be removed from the area before we could level and apply weed membrane. Old materials, green waste, roots and excess soil were recycled where possible or disposed in an 8 yard skip.
We planned to provide various raised beds created from new railway sleepers in various sizes across the area. The railways sleepers used for this project were 10" x 6" x 2.4m length. We cut the railway sleepers as required to create the necessary sized raised beds.
A hexagonal bed was designed to form the centre piece for the raised bed vegetable garden. The hexagonal railway sleeper bed was to form a central focus point that would be perfect for planting herbs that the clients could utilise in their everyday home cooking.
The raised beds were bolted and screwed with galvanised brackets from the inside of the timber. This creates a clean look with no brackets or visible joints from the outside of the railway sleeper raised beds.
Once the railway sleeper beds were created, the weed supressing membrane was covered in 20mm gravel. This provides an area that is easily maintained, cost effective and blends well with the rest of the garden area. We used 3 tons of 20mm gravel to cover the whole area.
Due to the existing drop from the existing patio to the new raised bed garden area, we had to build two L shape steps from 450mm patio slabs. The steps were laid on a full bed of mortar.
Three smaller raised beds were created nearer to the clients house. One of the beds was created for a sandpit for a young child and the othet two smaller beds as a planting area for the clients children.
The completed project transformed the garden area.
Once the landscaping was complete we finished the project by adding a mix of top quality soil with manure to the raised beds and allowed to settle before the client could start planting.
